What Are SIPs ?

SIPs stands for Structural Insulated Panel . it consist of two outer layers of Oriented Strand Board (OSB) sandwiched around an Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) core.

Many SIP are available, from standard 4-foot by 8-foot pieces to panels as long as 24 feet.

SIP are manufactured under factory controlled conditions and can be fabricated to fit nearly any building design.




 types of structural insulated panels (SIPs) :

Expanded polystyrene insulated panels .

Polyurethane or polyisocyanurate insulated panels.

Compressed straw-core insulated panels.


Design Flexibility

SIP can be engineered and fabricated to suit any design of building and can be erected on any flooring system, Such flexibility allows architects to express their design creativity without the restraints of conventional building materials

Eco-Friendliness

SIPs structures have great green credentials due to several reasons.

SIP is fully designed and fabricated in a controlled factory environment,

Less air and water pollution, gas emission, CO2 emission compared to other systems (concrete, bricks, steel)

They also use significantly less energy during the manufacturing process compared to traditional construction methods

Lastly, structural insulated panels use way less timber compared to traditional timber framing systems.

These types of panels, although more environmentally friendly, do not produce the high R-values of other types of SIP.

In some cases, SIP emit harmful substances into the air that may be dangerous to its inhabitants.


Resistance


They are highly fire resistant, and have been tested to offer 73 minutes of resistance.

it is resistant to water , moisture, mold and rot,

SIP-panels, unfortunately, are not resistant to rodents.

These panels are usually manufactured as 3.5-inch-thick panels for walls, and panels up to 7.5 inches thick for ceilings.

Construction using SIPs will require less energy to heat and cool your home’s interior space.because this material is an excellent thermal insulator.

Note : The amount of energy savings depends on the thickness of the panels.




installation

When installing electrical wire through SIPs, builders must hire subcontractors familiar with SIP construction. ( Only people who have passed the installation courses can install it , In case of incorrect installation, a lot of costs must be paid to compensate)

Special tools , often cranes and  computer-controlled equipment to  are required for installation. 

Note :

 Once installed, SIPs deliver unrivalled insulation and air tightness, which reduces energy costs over the building’s lifetime.



Cost

Generally ,  building a house with SIPs is less costly, and takes far less time overall than standard construction methods.

SIP construction requires minimal equipment and workforce.

SIP basic construction cost is 30% less than conventional concrete buildings

Labor costs are reduced when compared to traditional framing.

Low cost modifications and fast rate of construction, which will minimise the time, cost and labour force on your project.

any mistakes either in design or cutting of the SIPs can cost a builder both time and money.



The quality and climate of the SIPs

SIPs are not all manufactured equal. Be aware.

They are suitable for any climate. SIPs have been tested in both extreme cold and heat.


Note :

While the airtightness of SIPs is great for insulation, it can compromise ventilation, especially in buildings made entirely of this material.

SIPs should last about 60 years. If kept dry, it should last much longer.

 The concept behind structural insulated panels was born in the 1930s. and In recent years, SIPs have become more prevalent in residential construction.
